You make a point about 'Hannibal' having many amazing female characters who don't even interact. Yesterday was International Women's Day and a female sociologist on radio condemned this old, awful and very fixed custom to raise women in order that they are setting themselves against each other, instead of working together. Women are raised in competition and in judgment of other women, etc. all that for pleasing men. (1/2)
[…] Hence this misogynistic idea that women aren’t made for team work, team sports, etc. unlike men. In reality, it seems patriarcale society fears that women, as smart as men, work all together and consequently take more and more power! So yes, in ‘Hannibal’, by working in concert, Bedelia, Beverly and Alana (and even Freddie) could take Hannibal down… and could resuscitate Abigail *sigh* (2/2)
yes, completely agreed friend. well said. i certainly wish the show would make more of an effort to pass the bechdel test way more often.
I'm still on the sea ship 'Abi's not dead' because of the lack of evidence and the fact that someone can live without an ear. although there is a possibility that she really is dead, this feels like a deliberate 'putting this on a shelf for later' by way of plot distraction.
two eps in and still no mention of abigail hobbs. she’ll be in will’s dumb mind palace to further his angst but mostly, it seems just like fandom has forgotten her and easily moved on, the show has too. did they ever find her remains? besides her severed ear that keeps being brought up for will’s further manpain? does she even have a grave? what does her tomb stone say? beloved daughter? where is her extended family, her friends? does anyone remember or care? alana and freddie cared, can we get to see them mourn her or does everyone have collective amnesia? what happened to her few earthly belongings? did alana receive a box of released evidence containing the clothes she let abi borrow? did she cry opening it? can we please not forget abigail hobbs existed. she was so important. she was everything and she survived. she lived.
omg I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about Alana! I honestly don't hate her, but I find her treatment of Will demeaning at times (I mean, he's a grown man & you're not his mother). There are moments here and there where I like her (usually when she's standing up to Jack) but as a whole I feel the other female characters are much better (even Kade Purnell & she's only been on the show for 5mins). I know she's supposed to be the "heart" of the show, but it just falls flat for me.
exactly. i don’t hate the character, i hate what the writers are failing to do with her. i loved when she was standing up to jack’s specific brand of bs especially in defense of abigail. i wish they had explored that part of her character much more, her belief in abigail and strong desire to protect her and help her survive her trauma. that would’ve been a great way to develop alana as a character, an individual of her own and explore why she was so protective of abi and wanted to believe in her innocence yet knew she had secrets. buT WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT WENT HA HA ha. also, gotta love how hannibal has all these amazing female characters yet somehow they never talk to each other and barely interact, besides like in two scenes last season. instead of trying to hypnotize will in jail and turn into some oily medusa monster in will’s weird stag fantasies, why couldn’t alana go hang out with bev and be smart cool cop lady buddies discussing and analyzing will’s case, trying to help their mutual colleague over some chinese food and solve all the problems??? maybe call freddie up for a secret alliance to take hanni down?? maybe perform a ritual to bring abi back to life?? and no more women get fridged or burned alive or reduced to lifeless 2D love interests ughh dis show gonna give me ulcers
what do u mean by "misogynistic misery"? o.o i'm not trying to sound like a douche or anything i'm just genuinely curious >.<
alan bloom, originally a male character in the books was turned into a female because according to fuller, “the show needed more women.” that’s lovely, except how in actuality, this really meant that the show needed more women to… be the love interest for the two male protagonists. would dr. bloom have made out with will and almost had an affair with hannibal if he still had a dick? i’ll take a wild stab in the dark and say no. her character had so much potential in the beginning, but so far all of that potential has been pissed away by shitty misogynistic writing.
she exists only to be will’s sympathetic love interest slash occasional puppy baby sitter slash degrading “champion” slash hannibal’s flirty love affair, adding nothing of substance to the plot and eventually ending up just seeming like they’re trying really hard to give her anything legit to do plot-wise (and failing, since pretty much all her dialogue could have been given to any other character and it wouldn’t make a difference). her treatment of will is embarrassing and often either completely illogical or offensive, as she is supposed to be a professional psychologist, but oh no she has female parts so she can’t even do her job right because she is emotionally compromised by will’s puppy eyes. i question why they even changed the character’s gender in the first place, when all they’ve done with it is… nothing.
bedelia peacing out and fuller's comment that he hopes to explore her and will's bond makes me optimistic for bedelia's survival and the relief was instant. now i just need to focus my prayers on my sweet, sweet bev.
trufax, friend. if bedelia or bev are goners, i’ll burn everything fuller loves. i don’t have high hopes bev’s gonna make it tho, her role this season is expanded, she’s too smart to be alive for much longer. that’s how this show works apparently u know, punish the female characters for being smart capable survivors. just add bev to the fridge along with abi, i’m sure there’s plenty of room. i wish they’d kill off alana and end their terrible writing for her character instead and spare us anymore of that misogynistic misery.
Can we take a minute to appreciate something: 1) Bedelia doesn't think of Will as of an innocent little puppy. "then maybe you deserve each other" is a very important line to be remembered later. 2) Bedelia (suck it, fandom) acknowledges that, despite everything, Hannibal has been acting in Will's best interests. (at least he believes so). Basically, Bedelia still ships it.
BEDELIA FOR PRES. BEDELIA FOR QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE. WILL’S LIKE YO DOC WHAT’S UP AND BEDELIA’S LIKE HANNI’S BONER FOR YOU, THAT’S WHAT’S UP. SON DO YOU EVEN KNOW. Y’ALL TWO LOVEBUGS ARE CRAAY I’M OUTTA HERE YOU TWO HAVE FUN NOW don’t invite me to your wedding b y e
new show idea: my two red queens altliv and freddie taking over the world one hair flip at a time. how can i make this happen????
omg how do we!!! ok like freddie hears word of unusual events happening around america and her sources tell her of a secret FBI team who investigates them called the fringe division and being freddie goddamn lounds, she breaks into massive dynamic to uncover the truth of fringe division and how they’re linked to this huge, evil corporation, aiming to expose it to the world in the name of free press but she pushes too many buttons and ends up transported into the other universe with nothing but her note book and a camera, and accidentally finds the story of her life time and with pulitzers glowing in her eyes she becomes the biggest threat to fringe division on both sides (◕‿◕✿)
